Graham Carew is an Irish painter and mixed media artist. He works in acrylics and watercolour but also uses permanent markers, household paint, and aerosols to cover his surfaces with imagery and text, which run from rant to mythology to poetry to personal stories. He has shown his work and performed Irish poetry at home, in the UK, in the US, and in the Middle East. Being passionate about bringing art to people and about finding studio and showing space for artists, he spends the rest of his time working on projects that make these connections. Current Projects Working with Kilkenny Leadership Partnership on several art projects. One of which is about Identity and immigration. Co-Founder and Art Director 2013 - Wall Poems, Inc. A poetry-based nonprofit mural project, with more than 20 permanent painted walls and installations in Charlotte, NC, USA. Recipient of 2015 Neighborhoods in Creative pARTnership public art grant from the Arts and Science Council and a 2016 Knight Foundation Grant. www.wallpoems.com Co-Director and Design Artist, 2015 - 2018 Goodyear Arts is an innovative, nonprofit, artist-led led project that has artist residencies and events in underused buildings in Charlotte, NC, USA. It is focused on excellent local visual, performing and literary artists because ARTISTS NEED TIME, SPACE, MONEY AND COMMUNITY. Recipient of 2016 Knight Foundation Grant, 2018 - 2020 Knight Foundation Multi-Year Grant, 2018 - 2019 Women’s Impact Fund Two-Year Grant, and 2018 Arts and Science Council Cultural Vision Grant. www.goodyeararts.com Co-Director, 2013 - 2015 Artspace 525 was an artist-led artist in empty space residency project in Charlotte, NC, USA, located in one donated street-level retail space in Uptown. This project essentially evolved into Goodyear Arts. In 2010 worked on an Art community project in Kilkenny Ireland, Artists in empty spaces scheme with Kilkenny Art Council, where artists use empty shop units for temporary art spaces, to work and exhibit in.The focus was to utilise empty shop units for regeneration whilst also using the space as workspaces for artists.
