The Prayer Cycle series
The intention for these small paintings was to be a focus for meditation or contemplation with the central sphere representing an aspiration to completeness/fulfillment . I use the word “Prayer” in a broad non-religious sense
By coincidence , a piece of music I happened to be listening to while working on the first of this series of sculpted paintings turned out to be called The Prayer Cycle , a choral/orchestral album by American film and television composer Jonathan Elias comprised of nine movements , with vocals by Alanis Morissette , Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor among others
The symmetrical pieces on each side of the sphere in many cases resembled the posture of praying hands , so I appropriated the title.
Attention is paid to the negative space between the “pillars” ; the empty space often forms the shape of a teardrop
